Our first Virginia adventure

Welcome to our new blog! Now that we are far away from everyone we love (except for you Mal!), we are going to do much better on updating our blog with pictures and stories of our east coast adventures. I am abandoning the wordpress blog because I never had the time to learn it.

Well, we got to Virginia last Friday and are busy getting settled in. All of our boxes made it safely and we are mostly unpacked. Erik tried to go back to work earlier than planned, but he was told that he needs to take some time to get settled! OK, if you insist...

Since we have some extra time, we decided to start seeing all the sights around here. First stop: Mount Vernon, home to George and Martha Washington. We picked the nicest day of the week, which happened to end up quite cold. However, we were one of very few people there so it turned out rather nice.

Because it was so cold, and the entire thing is basically outside, we went almost straight to the mansion house for the tour. It was pretty incredible. Erik's favorite part was how it backs up to the Potomac River. I think his exact words were "I want a house that backs up to the Potomac." I told him he has to be president first. It was pretty dang incredible. In the summer you can take a ferry down the Potomac and see the mansion from there. We're definitely going to go back for that.

I have a feeling this is going to be so, so beautiful in the summer. We will definitely be coming back to see.

Esther's favorite part was looking at the animals in the barn. We didn't stay at the barn long because it was so cold.

Even though there was a lot of walking, Esther insisted on doing it herself. She definitely has a mind of her own. Of course, Eliza likes to make sure that Esther is going exactly where she needs to. She's a good big sister.

Here we are in front of the mansion right before we left. Esther did not want her picture taken, and it was very cold, so this was the best we could do.

We can't wait to go back and see more of what we missed, and especially to see what the estate looks like in the spring/summer. Come visit us so you can go too!
